It is an old Chinese saying: Jin Yu Liang Yuan, which means gold and jade are a good harmonious union, it was used to describe good harmonious of people's relationships.
Designers of Olympic games medal use this traditional ideas in their design work.

I agree it is a good idea for this design, it is a blending of traditional Chinese culture and the Olympism. It gives the winners of the Games great honor and acclamation as recognition of their achievement.
Just like The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games emblem "Chinese Seal, Dancing Beijing".
It must be a wonderful experiece to know more of Great ancient Chinese culture.
